The film industry is ever-changing and certainly has come a long way. This also means that new innovations and technologies will replace older ones. Sure, you can go out to watch a movie, but being able to stay home and watch something that you can pause at any time does sound more appealing. Will this lead to empty seats in the cinema, or can movie makers stand their ground?
What does the future hold for the film industry? Let’s first take a look at some recent changes that have helped shaped the industry as it is today.
Maybe one of the biggest changes to date is the increase of movies on streaming platforms. You can think of Netflix as perhaps the largest and most innovative, but also platforms like Hulu and Amazon have implemented a new catalog offering more than just TV shows. These platforms have created their own films starring big-time actors that you can watch exclusively and at any time you’d like, all for a small monthly fee of course.
Another major development does not necessarily have anything to do with new technologies, but it does have everything to do with social impact. Because of social groups speaking up and demanding equality, the film industry has actually listened and have acted to create movies that are more diverse.
Women are being cast for roles that we once classed as ‘’male-only roles’’. Movies that would have an only white cast now will be having a cast of other races included as well. So you can definitely tell that the film industry is trying to be more inclusive in who they cast for movies. Sure you can argue that big changes are being made, but I certainly do not think we’ve reached a tipping point just yet. I believe there’s still more to be done before we can say that the film industry treats everyone equally.
Now, these next developments are relatively new. However, they do make room for changes in the film industry and completely shape the future of our viewing experience.
Interactivity has become one of the key factors to engage an audience. Whether it is through advertising or creating interactive content for television, the way interactivity connects the viewer and makes them emotionally involved is on a whole new level. Right now the only real interactivity that is being implemented in movies is the choose-your-own-ending feature, that you might know from Netflix. It might be a bit difficult to achieve this in cinema, but I do believe that we can get something similar and engaging when we go out to see a movie in the future.
Speaking of interactivity, I, of course, have to mention Virtual Reality or VR in short. Recent developments in technology have brought VR-enabled video cameras to the market, which could also bring a personalized experience to individual movie viewers.
I do believe that these developments will change the future of our viewing experience for the better, we always seek to discover new things and get sucked into a story.
